A Wonderful Resource!
Lawrence's "People Types and Tiger Stripes" is a wonderful resource for active MBTI instructors or anyone who wants a deeper understanding of psychological type. I have found this book particularly useful in understanding how pyschological type affects learning styles and motivation and I have used concepts directly from this book in my MBTI sessions. Pictures of the Gone World (Pocket Poets Series Number One)
Published in Paperback by City Lights Books (January, 1955)
Author: Lawrence Ferlinghetti
Average review score:

Word snap-shots of life
I am embarassed to say that I picked this book up on my last visit to City Lights (several years ago) but I never actually read it. Other than for a piece or two in an anthology, I had never read Ferlinghetti, period. Having enjoyed the hospitality of the upstairs poetry room, that seemed somehow ill-mannered of me.

Simply put, I liked this collection. The images and meanings are more subtle than a lot of poets with Beat roots. He can really paint a word picture to put you in the scene. You instantly soak up the nuances of the whole. Then maybe he'll nudge you, ever so slightly, into seeing the absurdity in it. Or perhaps he'll interject a reminder of your own mortality in a simular subtle way. It is appropriate that one of the poems deals with Edward Hopper. I get that Hopperesque quality of an observer in an existential urban landscape with much of the collection.

About the only difference that I detected from the first 27 poems (written by 1955) and the 18 new ones (new in 1995) is a difference in rhythm. The older poems have much more of that classic coffee house beat- at least in my head. Of yes, he also uses the term "cyberpunk" in one of them.... But the word painting, and sense of subtle absurdity, is still right on the money.

refreshingly fresh and innocent and playful and insightful
This has to be my favorite volume of poetry to date (yet I am still young and have much to read). I found it "refreshing" and "light" if you will, yet at the same time taking on some real insight. My favorite poems in the volume include "Heaven"; which I take as almost a poetic criticism OF poetry, and "London"; which takes on issues of physical beauty. All the poems in here I enjoy immensely. Well worth your small investment. (Plus it has historic value being the first in the legendary Pocket Poets Series.

Piggy Pie
What a lovely review. My mother is June Talarczyk. She illustrated over 30 books for T.S. Denison when I was growing up. She and Jane Riley also combined their talent on "The Little Seal With Meal Appeal" (my personal favorite) and "A Golden Christmas Jewel". I showed her this page and she was overjoyed. June would be interested in hearing from anyone interested in her childrens books.
You can contact June Talarczyk by mail at 37539 State Hwy. 13, Montgomery, MN 56069.

We giggle every time we read it again
The story is a combination of Old MacDonald's Farm and the 3 Little Pigs. The illustrations are wonderful. Little children like the secrets in the pictures. Older children like the wicked sense of humor. It is fun to read this to anyone who will be read to. And no one EVER says,"Oh, I've already read that. Let's find something else."

Play Bridge With Mike Lawrence
Published in Paperback by Devyn Pr (March, 1986)
Author: Mike Lawrence
Average review score:

Think like an expert.
One of the best bridge books ever. Shows how an expert thinks.

RELAX--ENJOY
Yes, you will learn a lot, but oh, so painlessly. Mike has a sly, dry sense of humor mixed with dispassionate common sense that emphasizes the need to size up your opponents. All the technical skill in the world will not save you if you misjudge who is sitting to your right and left. Mike has an enormous ability to get through to the reader what it takes to be effective. I recommend this book and the similar "Play Teams with Mike Lawrence" (my favorite) as an introduction to his more serious books. I own most of them, and through the years I would say every one of them has improved my game, some enormously.

Some years ago I wrote to Mike about a hand that I was proud of the result, but my more traditional player/friends scorned my wizardly thinking. I held S-QJ10, H-XX-D-XX C-A10XXXX. Partner opened one heart. For various systemic reasons the bid 1NT was not available to me. I cleverly bid 1S; confusion reigned, and we received an excellent result--but my purist friends were horrified at my bid. Mike's response to my letter was "did you ever hear of the word 'pass'?" I loved it.

To serious and non-serious bridge players, get this book. It's a treat!

Preventing Arthritis: A Holistic Approach to Life Without Pain

Arthritis Techniques Great
This is the first book I have ever read that deals with joint protection. The recommendations make good sense and I have already started to incorporate them into my lifestyle. I was surprised when I read the information about how arthritis can be caused or aggravated by not drinking enough water. I have already stepped up my water intake. Lots and lots of good advice and eye-opening facts about how arthritis can cause many serious, and even life-threatening, conditions...

Preventing Arthritis
As a health-conscious and active individual in my early thirites, I am always looking for information that can help prevent illness later on in life. This is the first book I have ever seen that tells me how to keep my joints healthy for a lifetime. The recommendations are sensible and practical, and I have started to put them into practice.

Principles of Development
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (13 December, 2001)
Authors: Lewis Wolpert, Rosa Beddington, Thomas Jessell, Peter Lawrence, Elliot Meyerowitz, and Jim Smith
Average review score:

An Excellent Textbook
Wolpert's developmental biology textbook is evidently an excellent text in its field. The authors are all well recognized in thier research areas. The organization of the text is also very well written. The summary of the concept presented at the end of each chapter is helpful. The figures presented througout the text are clear and the language used to explain them is simple but very understandable. Compared with the well-known Gilbert's text, this text may be less in dept but you can get the concept from this book for only half of the time reading Gilbert's. It is a nice book to have both for the new beginner in the field and for just a quick reference.

Greatest revolution of text in development
@I read this book for 2 months. Chapters of regeneration is more impressive than any other chapters. Moreover, I impressed that this bppk is best for beginners and students. Composition is also excellent.

Principles of Orthopaedic Practice
Published in Hardcover by McGraw-Hill (01 January, 1989)
Authors: Roger Dee, Enrico Mango, and Lawrence C. Hurst
Average review score:

Core Knowledge Study Guide
This book represents a core knowledge in orthopaedics. It is a good place to start your reading on most conditions faced in practice.

The chapters are not exhaustive in their analysis of topics, hence a more detailed analysis of a topic would need to be supplemented with literature reading. e.g. Arthroplasty
It is not a technical book! but guides the reader to critical papers that should be read to supplement the book.

Highly recommended for the trainee in their first years of training to get started, or the more seasoned practitioner to quickly brush up!

An excelent book
A very good book which servs as the official Textbook in our orthopeadic department. Quite easy to read and very thorow.

The Probable World (Penguin Poets)
Published in Paperback by Penguin USA (Paper) (03 April, 2000)
Author: Lawrence Raab
Average review score:

Better than Berryman
Simply put: This book is excellent.

Beautiful and Elegant (and Funny)
When I teach poems to my 9th graders, I always give them a taste of Lawrence Raab's poetry because, as I tell them, "he captures the lyric beauty of our media-saturated culture" (it's fun to say this to 14-year-olds--they just kind of stare blankly at these sort of statements). And when I read "Attack of the Crab Monsters" aloud to them, some of them laugh, some of them (figuratively) scratch their heads, and some of them keep doodling obliviously in their notebooks, but then I read it aloud again and most of them begin to realize that poetry isn't all intricate puzzles, or frilly romances, or political statement...poetry is what you make it.

This new collection by Raab reveals a poet who has mastered his voice, and it's a voice that is poignant, witty, and profound. Raab's poetry tends to focus on the small, perhaps overlooked, details of life, like the dreams of his young daughter, the inexplicable joy of a dog, or the reminiscence of childhood fantasies.

Poems like "Great Art" or "Another Argument About the Impossible" deal with the artistic process itself. They comment on the thinking that occurs between the lines, behind the paint, and in so doing, quietly reveal an essential truth about life: we could have done things differently, but the other choices wouldn't have made things better, just...different.

I highly recommend THE PROBABLE WORLD to anyone who likes to think deeply about the small things in life.

Proposals That Work : A Guide for Planning Dissertations and Grant Proposals
Published in Paperback by Sage Publications (August, 1999)
Authors: Lawrence F. Locke, Waneen Wyrick Spirduso, and Stephen J. Silverman
Average review score:

The Only Proposal Guide You Need
As any graduate student will tell you acceptance onto a Ph.D program is largely based on submitting a successful proposal. Thereafter, as long as the researcher adheres to the proposal, graduation is virtually guaranteed. I am a Ph.D student who used the book to construct my proposal, which was summarily accepted by the research committee with minor changes. This appears to be contrary to what many Ph.D hopefuls experience. The book is expensive however I would highly recommend it. The proposal hurdle is well worth overcoming professionally.

Focus your ideas into a practical proposal.
As someone who works privately with students and researchers in a variety of fields, I give this book my highest recommendation. The essence of any research project is the proposal. For dissertation students, the proposal is the blueprint for the entire dissertation process. For researchers in all fields, the research proposal is the most important vehicle for securing funding. When clients contact me in regard to assistance with their proposal, I recommend that they buy this book and use it as a reference.
